Wisdom Teeth Extraction – Your Options

To prevent your wisdom teeth from creating additional dental issues, your dentist may propose extraction. Some wisdom teeth that have become impacted may not require any treatment at all.

One important factor for your dentist to consider while extracting your wisdom teeth is how they should keep you as secure and relaxed as possible throughout the procedure.

Read on to learn about your anesthetic and sedative choices for your wisdom teeth extraction.

Local Anesthesia

Outside of the afflicted region, a local anesthetic will not put you to sleep, render you unconscious, or modify how you feel in any way. This makes it an excellent alternative for quick recovery, but it may not be appropriate for more invasive treatments if you are too uncomfortable.

General Anesthesia

The removal of your wisdom teeth usually does not need general anesthesia. In certain situations, your dentist may suggest this alternative, especially if the operation is lengthy or difficult or if you are under a lot of stress.

Rest certain that it will feel similar to falling asleep and waking up from your perspective. You will not respond to any reflexes or pain sensations, which distinguishes it from local anesthesia, which only numbs a certain location.

Sedation

Sedation is utilized in some circumstances for the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. There are multiple types of sedation depending on your unique situation.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

If you're worried about the surgery or are anxious, laughing gas is a good alternative to consider. The American Dental Association (ADA) considers nitrous oxide to be both safe and effective.

Because nitrous gas wears off rapidly, you should be able to drive yourself home following your surgery. Alternatively, your dentist may use a sedative in combination with nitrous gas and oxygen, rendering you unable to drive home.

IV Sedation

IV sedation involves administering intravenous (IV) drugs to induce a "twilight" state of awareness between awake and sleeping.

You should be comfortable and pain-free during the process, even if you are only partially aware. Your experience with mild sedation will be comparable to that of general anesthesia, in which you will have no recollection of the procedure. The medicines used may be comparable to those used in general anesthesia, but the dose will be different.
